According to the Demographic Reference Bureau, the world population has reached nearly 7,200,000,000 people and is growing rapidly. The University of Washington estimates that the world's population will reach a massive 11 billion people by 2100; this figure is even higher than the UN forecast of 10.1 billion in 2011. The current rate of population growth could have a devastating impact on the future well-being of humanity and the natural world this century . There are approximately 78 million more births than deaths each year; it's alarmingly rapid, even though most women have 2 or fewer children. This is equivalent to the entire population of Germany each year. The Ministry of Global Health and Population (GHP) is diligently contributing to improving health education and research and finding new ways to help maintain and plan effective ways to manage the world's population in rapid growth. The department's research interests cover a wide range of topics, including social and economic development, health policy and demography; design and financing of health systems; the health of women and children; prevention and control of infectious and chronic diseases; and geographic information systems (GIS). The department has a particular interest in health equity and human rights issues, particularly as they relate to health and population issues in developing countries.
