    History of Web-based Learning Most students look forward to graduating from high school and moving on to college. They can't wait to get away from home to discover new things. What happens if a student can't afford college or just isn't ready to leave home? How to complete a Masters or Doctorate program at 51 with three children? That's where web-based learning comes in. When people think of web-based learning, they tend to imagine a man talking to you through the computer. That's what I believed until my sister decided to get her master's degree online. She worked like a dog; write articles, attend required online discussions, watch videos, and implement lessons in your classroom. It wasn't the easy route I thought it would be. The emergence of powerful computers has revived hopes that machines could act as teachers and facilitate learning. Everyone learns in their own way. Regardless, people need to actively participate to absorb the knowledge. Web-based learning has a history beyond staring at the computer screen. Computers can only make the acquisition of knowledge more interesting or less expensive, or both. This is why the student who cannot afford to go to university can take certain courses at home. Additionally, many people simply cannot learn in a classroom environment. Using the web gives the learner a change of pace that makes learning fun. Many young people aged forty to fifty may feel very uncomfortable walking around a college campus. They may be looking to change careers and the Internet allows an anonymity that is not available anywhere else. Web-based learning doesn't have to take place only on a college campus. Many elementary and secondary school teachers may assign Web projects because its ease of use makes the Internet trivially accessible to students with no prior knowledge of computers, programming, or even networking, making it more tempting to teachers to benefit from it. My teachers didn't use the Web often, but when they did, I appreciated it because it was a change of pace..
