A loving father is one who listens, suggests and advocates for his child. A loving father is patient, loving and loyal. A loving father is also someone who would do anything for his child. They want the best for their child, they protect their child. In the book Freak The Mighty by Rodman Philbrick, Killer Kane may not always seem to like Max, but he does. He does what he can to show Max that he loves him, but he has strange ways of showing it. Killer Kane loves his son Max because he is protective and cares about his son's feelings. Max's father, Killer Kane, nicknamed Killer Kane after killing his wife, managed to get out of prison for murder. He had a restraining order stating he couldn't come within a mile of Max's house. When we first meet Killer Kane, he kidnaps Max from the depths where he sleeps. He uses this to show Max that he was thinking about him and wanted to see him. He says, “I’m back.” “As I promised” (Philbrick page, 100). This shows that Killer Kane cared that his son Max didn't have a father figure and was coming back even though he might be arrested as soon as he got out of prison. If Killer Kane didn't care about Max or love him, he wouldn't have bothered to come back to Max, especially if it meant he had to go back to prison when he got out. Killer Kane cared enough about Max's feelings because he put Max before himself and only thought about what was good for Max, like a loving father would. Additionally, while Max was in the basement tied up by Killer Kane and Loretta tries to untie him, Killer Kane becomes furious. He doesn't know how to control himself when he's angry, but he does something to fix the situation. Killer Kane said sternly, "I'm going to teach you how to put your dirty hands in the middle of paper...and I just didn't know how to show it in difficult times for him." Killer Kane is still protective, cares about Max and wants the best for him. When Killer Kane came back to Max when he could have been arrested, he showed that he cared and loved Max enough to be arrested again right after he got out of prison. Killer Kane showed that he was protective of Max when Loretta tried to untie Max and Killer Kane told her not to lay her hands on her son. He showed that he wanted the best for Max when he said that he wanted to start a life with Max. Killer Kane just wanted Max to have the father figure he needed in his life. Killer Kane listens, suggests, defends. Is patient, loving and loyal. He would do anything for Max, he wants the best for Max and protects Max. In the novel Freak The Mighty by Rodman Philbrick, Killer Kane is truly a loving father and he proves it.
