The Bible is a sacred text that has guided men and women in life to stay on this path of goodness and selflessness. According to Freud, the Bible could be the cause of civilization's misfortune. The freedom of humanity has been stifled because of the restraint that society has imposed on our “primal nature.” Anything that goes against the structure that the Bible has created in society has been pushed aside and ignored because it is no longer something that can be considered real or taken seriously. Freud believes that the happiness we cannot achieve is due to the freedoms we lack. This belief that he lacks freedom is not correct based on the chapters of the Bible. Man's inability to be happy or stay happy is due to his need to have something to prove. This feeling that they will be the exception to life's difficulties is the main cause of the downfall of humanity. The regulations that are passed are not the result of a higher power directing them, but of members of society deciding what is acceptable. Because of Freud's theory, I conclude that because of the repression that people in society impose on themselves, human beings are the cause of their own unhappiness. Freud says that “it is difficult for humanity to be happy…” (24). Although this statement is controversial when looking at texts like the Bible we notice that he may not be wrong. In the book of Genesis and Exodus, we are constantly shown these examples that have stood the test of time to prove that we have this ability to take the incredible opportunities presented to us and turn them into struggle. Freud would say that this is due to a “feeling of inadequacy…” (24). However, when we look at the books of the Bible, it shows that people do not realize that they have this freedom. People have this ability to decide which paths they choose... middle of paper ... without realizing it until one has to suffer the consequences, this is one of the reasons behind oppression that we impose on ourselves. Adam and Eve ate the apple and did not think about why they should not eat the apple until they realized they were naked. The ego shows that we often don't think about what happens next. Similar to Adam and Eve, questions and feelings are not considered until people get into trouble or regret the decision they made. Ego mixed with Id is this didactic of being in the real world and having all these freedoms, but for some reason humanity just like Adam is hiding from it. Both Freud and the Bible believe in this ability to be happy without the structures and rules that society deems necessary today. However, the Bible shows that human beings have this predisposition to hold back because of their lack of confidence in themselves and in others...
