Essay / The Importance of Critical Race Theory - 1369
Cinema in the media industry has a significant influence on its audience, which helps in projecting many messages based on certain topics. Critical Race Theory (CRT) clearly shows that racial issues still exist and are very present in media, especially in films shown today. The use of storytelling helps display hegemony, where white people are portrayed as superior and even though society likes to say that racism has ended, the media still depicts many racial issues. The counter-narrative is used in critical race theory in order to contradict racist characterizations of society, it challenges the stories reinforced by hegemony. It is more common to find films that show white supremacy than to see films that explore themes where people of color are superior and equal, just as white people are portrayed. In both modern films In Time and Elysium, both films reflect many aspects of racial issues related to culture, class, and ethnicity. In Time (2011) is a film based on a future society where people are genetically engineered to stop aging. twenty-five and after that a clock is activated with one more year for every citizen. Time is a currency and the rich people who live in New Greenwich are almost immortal, while the poor people live in the ghettos with their time zones exploited and are forced to live on a few hours or days, while they need to work , to borrow. , beg or steal to stay alive. Thieves steal time and timekeepers control society, but no one, including the rich, does anything to help those in need. The main character Will is white and he lives in one of the poor time zones and on his way to work there are people on the ground shown dead because they were short...... middle of paper. ..... People and even though it is a diverse society, there is a ruling class that dominates and manipulates their views and accepted beliefs to make them the norm. This is evident in both films as white supremacy is exposed through a counter-story, proving through both characters taking actions that speak for people of color, as it removes the connection that people of color color are more “prone” to commit crimes. CRT has the ultimate goal of creating social justice and it will be an ongoing battle that will gradually be won once CRT spreads so that society can be color blind and give equal opportunities to all and not just be a privilege for those who are white. So, I hope that one day there will be films that share stories and messages to their audiences that color does not define a person and that everyone truly has the opportunity to be the hero and succeed..
