Essay / Racial Discrimination and Health Care - 1821
Today's society protects itself against discrimination through laws passed to protect minorities. Minority people can be defined as “a group with little power or representation compared to other groups within a society” (The Free Dictionary). It is unethical for anyone to discriminate based on race or ethnicity in a medical situation, whether it takes place in the private setting of a person's home or in a public hospital. Racial discrimination, in a medical context, is unethical based on legal statutes, moral teachings, and social statuses. In this essay, the position I will argue is that it is unethical to allow an elderly white man to discriminate against Africans. American health professionals to enter his home. The African American race is a recognized minority in the United States, making up only 13.1% of the population (US Quickfacts). Compared to the Caucasian population which represents 77.9% of the population, African Americans are in the minority (US Quickfacts). Knowing that the African-American race is a minority, it is less represented. Using three mediums to support my position, I will argue against racial discrimination in a health care environment, specifically in the home of an elderly white man. First, I will use laws and policies that have been enacted to protect against racial discrimination in the United States. Second, I will refer to moral teachings to illustrate how the legal position can be supported in ethical decision making. Finally, I will argue my position against racial discrimination in a private social environment, such as this nursing home. Through these three examples, I will defend my position that it is not ethical for white elderly people......middle of paper......n Bioethics. 8th ed. New York: McGraw-Hill, 2013. 14-17. Print.
