  • Essay / American Education - 1382

The American education system was built to educate the nation's children, and has been for years, but there is an inequality that forms within the system that provides children with different pathways and leads to different ends. . Some students attend schools with nice facilities, updated resources like books from the current decade, heating and ceilings that don't collapse, and without weekly bomb threats. These students often receive a better education and are adequately prepared for life, while students who attend schools without the attributes mentioned are often less prepared. What can be done to address this inequality? This article will briefly describe the problem with America's educational structure focusing on inequalities based on: socioeconomic class, race and ethnicity, and violence/bullying, while discussing the harmful consequences of problem, and finally discussing three solutions that could help solve the problems and make a good education an option for all students. The American education system has the potential to create high-level thinkers, and it often does, but some students do not have the opportunity to become high-level thinkers because that path is hindered by aspects such as socioeconomic status, racial and ethnic disparities, and violence in schools. Socioeconomic status is a major determinant of which school a student attends and how they can progress (Leon-Guerrero 2013, 207). Students whose families earn higher incomes generally live in neighborhoods where the school is renovating and hiring new teachers, while their less wealthy counterparts live in neighborhoods where the school is falling apart. Structurally, they are losing qualified teachers due to budgetary restrictions. middle of paper ...counselors helped work on any anger and/or other emotional issues, while parents served as reinforcements. Guerrero writes that “the most effective anti-violence school programs are those that include parental participation,” so it is understood that parental support for initiatives is a key factor in making this initiative widespread. Additionally, if this is a national program, the support would likely be immense and would allow the program to operate more effectively. This won't end bullying, but it can reduce it and, more importantly, help those suffering from bullying deal with their problems with the support of others. It would require a lot of organization and employing more counselors, but it seems like a plan that would end the disparities caused by bullying and harassment in school systems..
