Cheyenne ShoresP. 3Feline CancerIn cats, there are many types of diseases that can be very detrimental to them. One of the scariest and most common cancers in humans and our animal counterparts. Cancer can be painful, terrifying and, in many cases, deadly. Most Common Types Although cats are less likely to develop cancer than dogs, there are many types of cancer that a cat can get. Some of the most common are lymphoma, skin cancer, oral squamous carinomas of the gums or oral cancer, and osteocacroma. Lymphoma is a type of cancer that begins in lymphocyte cells, a type of whole blood cell. Lymphocyte cells play an important role in the immune system. Lymphoma is responsible for approximately 90% of blood cancers and approximately 33% of all tumors in cats. It is also the most common cause of hypercalcemia in cats. (Science Weekly, 2012) Skin cancer in cats often appears as a white patch or raised bump on the skin. The bump often ulcerates with occasional bleeding. These types of carcinomas are usually malignant; early detection and treatment is preferable. These cancer cells can easily spread, like any other cancer, to other organs. Skin cancers are more likely in cats living at high altitudes or in cats with light coats, especially white. (Crain, D, 2005) Oral squamous carinomas of the gum, or oral cancer, are particularly deadly and move quickly through the body, with usually fatal results. These tumors grow very quickly and usually invade nearby bones and tissues. These carcinomas are usually seen in older cats. (PetMD, 1999-2014) Osteosacroma is the most common benign bone tumor in veterinary practice. This cancer is particularly painful, the most common locations for these tumors are the humerus, femur and tibia...... middle of paper ...... ps one day we will find it and a vaccine and a cure could be developed.DiagnosisThe diagnosis of these cancers is very tricky because they tend to have the same symptoms, not only for themselves but also for other diseases. Lymphoma is commonly misdiagnosed as IBS, and as a result, treatment of IBS usually causes the cancer to spread and develop. (Science Weekly, 2012) Just like with human cancers, when you find a growth under the skin on any part of the body, it is important to go to the veterinarian and have it examined. The most common way to diagnose cancers is through a biopsy, which involves taking a portion of the flesh from the area suspected of being affected and testing it for possible cancer cells. Most cancers are misdiagnosed or not diagnosed at all because their symptoms often resemble other, more treatable and common diseases...
