Essay / The ethical relationship between technology and medicine
Society is not the only dynamic entity in the doctor-patient relationship. Medicine as a science is in constant change, while medicine as an art is marked by constancy and fidelity. The science of medicine, and the rapid evolution of technology applied to medicine, involves the possibility of conflict between practice, innovation and what the public demands. This conflict could undermine the social contract of medicine and must be resolved firmly. To the extent that this practice is challenged by new technologies, the right course of action cannot be dictated by morality and norms based on previous experiences. When the path forward is unclear, dialogue is necessary to find consensus between what is right and the common good. Dialogue is the basis of ethics as opposed to morality. The debate is urgent and must be global, inclusive and binding on the conduct of all doctors if we want to honor the social contract by avoiding ruptures or discontinuities. The social contract between medicine and society calls for medicine to be perpetually available to the patient in the manner it claims. The patient accesses medical care with all confidentiality rights and hopes to complete the consultation, relying on the discretion of the doctor and with all his personality, however, technology allows genetic testing, which speaks loud and clear about the essence of a person and their descendants, which can redefine the expectations of that person, their family and their neighbors. If the gene for a disease is discovered, the patient may be stigmatized and subjected to prejudice or exclusion. For example, if a simple test could unequivocally predict premature death due to heart disease or cerebrovascular disease, which employer would invest in professional practice, we must always respond to the needs of our patients, providing them with warmth, comfort and showing that medicine is there to take care of them. We cannot ignore the findings of science. Findings are not necessarily good or bad. It is your application that is good or bad. These discoveries relate to how we do our work and how we perceive our place in the universe. Perhaps we are not prepared for the implications of a new discovery. If discovery or discovery means truth, our prior beliefs are a lie?. When will this new truth be destroyed by new truths? Ethics calls us to discuss the right course of action, the right application, a right plan for the future with our communities and colleagues. Conflicts must be resolved simply. Medical ethics is imperative to preserve the ancient beauty of medicine and lead to responsible use of science and technology..
