Any form of neglect or abuse and failure to meet a child's basic needs is considered child abuse. Failure to provide sufficient food, shelter, basic supervision, necessary medical or mental health treatment, adequate education, or emotional comfort constitutes child abuse. Other forms of abuse include physical and sexual abuse, with physical abuse referring to intentionally harming a child. Examples of physical abuse include hitting, kicking, beating, biting, or any other indication that could be considered physical abuse. Sexual abuse occurs when a child engages in or imitates sexual acts, whether through persuasion or force. Child abuse or abuse can occur in all families, regardless of social class, status, race or religion. Families from all backgrounds can experience child abuse or abuse. There is no single cause of child abuse, although many factors can contribute to child abuse. Many forces combine. As previously stated, child neglect and abuse can occur in any family and any social class. However, many factors can increase the risk of child abuse and maltreatment. Poverty and unemployment can increase child maltreatment, especially when there is a combination of stress, substance abuse or depression. Parents or guardians with less material and emotional support, who do not have a positive parental role model, feel less pressure from conventional parental standards; and because they do not have positive parenting, child welfare is put at risk. Additionally, children who live in unsafe neighborhoods are at higher risk than those living the American dream of being severely neglected and victims of physical or sexual abuse. Violence witnessed by young children has been found to view violence as an acceptable response or behavior for those who witness it.
