  • Essay / Essay on Discrimination in Education - 2009

Discrimination in education is still a reality, even today when most people no longer hold the same bigoted views that they used to over 50 years old. The most common reason for discrimination in education is due to racial disparities. Many of these discriminations are the result of past discrimination against a group of people that appears to affect their children. The most important period for children to acquire their cognitive skills and for their behavioral development is the preschool period. A child's level of academic preparation before entering preschool depends primarily on the child's parents. Throughout my research, I discovered that the amount of time that passes before a child even enters school can have a huge impact on their academic performance, perhaps for the rest of their life. Studies show that children who start preschool with a disadvantage in school readiness typically fall further behind, while those who start with an advantage typically progress further. During my interview, I learned about the problems disadvantaged children face in disadvantaged environments where learning can be difficult. Past racial discrimination has led to a disparity in economic status that has further disadvantaged children. Three conditions generally must be met for a student to learn. They must first have the opportunity to learn in the form of books, a teacher or even the Internet. The second condition is the student's effort in terms of time spent on learning and level of concentration on learning. The last condition concerns the prerequisite skills and knowledge to learn. For example, you can't read a book if you don't learn to read first. For the purposes of this research I will focus on ...... middle of paper ...... against which people are incriminated in relation to employment or professional opportunities which may affect the region in which their child lives and goes to school. Either way, the child faces problems as soon as he enters school and this failure can have an effect on his entire life. But not in all cases, since much of academic success and learning arises from the individual's learning efforts. Gender discrimination can also affect a child's entire life when it begins in the early years. Some teachers give grades in primary school based on gender. The discouragement of learning that a child may develop after receiving poor grades may also affect their desire to learn in later years. We must therefore, as a society, understand and know how easily children are influenced during the first ten years of their lives and the impact this has not only on them, but also on our entire generations future..
