Essay / Laughter and Humility in the Eyes of St. Benedict
There are many different reactions to St. Benedict's response and advice regarding laughter, how laughter is a bad trait, and how it can also sometimes be a good trait . Many do not agree with what St. Benedict says about laughter, simply in my opinion it is because they do not fully understand what he is talking about and his position on the issue. 1“Let us follow the advice of the Prophet: I said: I have resolved to watch over my ways so that I never sin with my tongue. I was silent and humiliated, and refrained from even kind words. Although St. Benedict is not totally against laughter and humor, he does not fully support them either. As long as it comes from a positive place, and not something negative or demeaning, it's more acceptable to laugh and have a good time, which is something we can all agree on. Some people may say that St. Benedict is a bit harsh in his teachings, giving the impression that his opinions are the only right way to live. I believe, however, that St. Benedict has some very valid points, and if you look at what he says from a Christian perspective and with an open mind, you too will fully understand his teachings. In reviewing the Rule of Saint Benedict, the word laughter attracts the reader's attention in three different chapters and in five (more) versus different ones. 2St. Benedict makes several different points about laughter and explains why he doesn't think laughter should be a part of a person's daily life. 2In chapters 4, 6 and 7, this is where Saint Benedict speaks of laughter. In each chapter he makes very clear the reasons why you should not participate in laughter and how it can be hurtful to others. 2In chapter 4, verse 53, Saint Benedict declares: “Speak no foolish chatter, nothing... middle of paper... ess, 1996).Doyle, Francis Cuthbert.
