  • Essay / No Child Left Behind - A sound program or an atrocious program...

Through the No Child Left Behind program, students are tested in a way that does not accurately measure learning. The No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB or The Act) was proposed in 2001, an addition to the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, to help disadvantaged or minority students. Thanks to this law, students were required to take standardized tests. One of the primary reasons for implementing standardized testing under NCLB was to increase schools' AYP, as well as adequate yearly progress; this measures the progress of schools in meeting certain standards set by the federal government. The federal government should eradicate the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 because it creates significant problems, limits learning, and has proven ineffective. First, the NCLB law creates significant problems in specific schools and school districts, and as with all school families, they are protesting the law in many ways. “The growing role of standardized testing in U.S. classrooms is sparking pockets of rebellion across the country from school officials, teachers and parents who say the system stifles teaching and learning . » (Banchero 1) This creates significant problems as parents/guardians and even staff are outraged by the idea of standardized testing. They don't think it's acceptable to require education to have stricter guidelines. They modify the program in order to make it more stimulating. The reality is that they narrow the criteria for evaluation.
