  • Essay / The importance of a multicultural society - 732

Unlike European countries, we have a higher level of acceptance when interacting with people from different cultures, from businesses to media approaches (Bastian , 2012, p. 67; For example, most Muslim women wear the hijab or kippah to work because it is a tradition of their culture. In some European countries this was prohibited. People thought it was inappropriate to present the companies' image in this way (Bouma, 2015). However, in Australia this is not a problem because people understand that there are differences between different cultures. Employees and students in Australia are able to follow the rules while preserving their traditions (Bouma, 2015). Not only do businesses and schools have a responsibility to eliminate barriers between cultures, but the media is also responsible because it can affect people's approach to intercultural communication (Bastian, 2012, p. 68) . Bastian (2012, p. 68) mentioned that balanced understanding between cultures must be promoted, because when there are no biases or prejudices, it is easier to build a better multicultural environment.
