  • Essay / Participatory Design in Interior and Space Design

Participatory design simply means encouraging and producing new social relationships. It is a design approach that attempts to actively involve participants in the design process. Sometimes this is useful to ensure that the designed product meets their needs and is usable. The term has been used in many different fields such as: product design, architecture, software design, graphic design… It has also been used at different scales and in different contexts (building performance, user performance, performance of a product…). As a means of creating environments that are more responsive and more attuned to the cultural, emotional, spiritual and practical needs of their inhabitants and users. In participatory design, participants are invited to cooperate with designers, researchers and developers during an innovation process. They participate in several stages of an innovation process: they participate in initial exploration and problem definition both to help define the problem and focus solution ideas, and during development they help to evaluate the proposed solutions. For some, this approach includes a political dimension of user empowerment and democratization. For others, it is seen as a way of abrogating design responsibility and designer innovation. Additionally, my essay will continue on how participatory design is used, its importance and its relationship with interior and spatial design. There will also be my critical perspective on different examples of participatory design. Spatial or interior architectural designs can be participatory or performance-based, but in most cases they will feature a combination of both. Although performance is an obvious undertaking in design, participation cannot...... middle of paper ......the areas mentioned illustrate the performance requirements and participatory nature of interior and spatial designs . Conversely, all linkable knowledge areas illustrate the duties and responsibilities expected of interior design and space design experts. Above all, the efficient and participatory nature shows that space design and interior design, as professions, integrate technical know-how, creativity and entrepreneurial skills. . Furthermore, as these writings demonstrate, performance and participation are seen as a combination that forms the theoretical context within which spatial and interior designs operate. Apart from this, space, as a design concern, unites the two types of designs as two similar design undertakings, and this is justifiable even considering the distinction that can be conceived in relation to the geometric implication on space..
