    I. Old Testament Essay, Topic One, One Book - The Book of Leviticus The genre of the Book of Leviticus is law. According to our text, the author of Leviticus is anonymous, but the evidence points to Moses as the author. (Illustrated Bible Survey page 62.) The book was written around 1445 BC after the renewal of the Mosaic covenant. The major theme of the book of Leviticus seems to point toward holiness and ceremonial purity. Leviticus is considered a guide to worship for priests and laity. The purpose of this book was to teach Israel how God expected them to act as God's chosen people. Some major events that took place in the book of Leviticus are Moses explaining that sacrifices are essential for Israel to have access to God. Moses gives the laws of sacrifices which show how God expected them to make atonement for their sins. The specific offerings included in the book of Leviticus are the sin offering, the trespass offering, the burnt offering, the grain offering, which was the Israelites' way of paying for their sins.
