  • Essay / Western Beauty Standards of Western Women - 1121

This only leads them to another type of sexism, as Cudd and Jones call "institutional sexism." When a woman wants to get a job, the standards imposed on her are quite high. For example, if a woman wants to get a job as a model, then she must be a size 0 to be able to get this type of job. As simple as if a woman wanted a job at Hooters, then she must meet certain criteria of what a “Hooters waitress” looks like. For a time, the restaurant even based its final decision on the appearance of women applying for Hooters. It is unfair for a woman to be judged on her appearance and not her performance. Even if sexism no longer seems to exist, it does exist. Society pressures women to learn and act a certain way, and even if they don't really want to, they still do it because they prefer to "fit in" rather than be a woman.
