  • Essay / Urie Bronfenbrenner and his Ecological Systems Theory

It takes a lot of thought to prepare a child for the change that occurs when moving from a home/childcare environment to a school environment. The teacher must consider the child as a whole throughout the transition to school activities. This should include the child's physical readiness, social-emotional and cognitive abilities for learning. It is also essential to find ways to involve children's first and most important teachers, their families. Families have the most information about the strengths, weaknesses, and challenges the child faces. Being able to communicate with families is vital for teachers as they gather in-depth information about their students so they can be better equipped to meet children's needs. Urie Bronfenbrenner's ecological theory "examines children's development in the context of systems of relationships." which form their environment. (MORRISON, 2009) This theory describes multi-faceted levels within the environment, where each layer has a specific influence on a child's development. In Bronfenbrenner's theory, there are five interconnected ecological systems:I. Microsystem: this level is closest to the child and includes the elements with which the child has direct interactions. It includes all the relationships and contacts that the child maintains with his immediate environment, such as family, neighborhood, school and daycare. There are two directions in which these relationships within this level impact the child: toward and away from the child. For example: a child's parents influence his or her actions and beliefs; again, the child also influences the parents' beliefs and actions ... middle of paper ... they know how important it is and how much their parents care about them and their education. , JS (1997).
