  • Essay / Power and Control - 609

The people of this country have been integrated into the idea of having the power and ability to govern themselves to lead exceptional lives. This fire burns in the minds of governments, corporations, ordinary men and, in this case, what is considered the lowest class: African Americans. In a country where there is a constant struggle for racial equality, whether in urban or rural settings, race dictates power to characters like Emmett Till in Bob Dylan's "The Ballad of Emmet Till," Tom Robinson in To Kill a. Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, and Mama in A Raisin In The Sun, by Lorraine Hansberry. All of these characters vary in the ways in which they are persecuted, but are linked by their struggle. Representing the idea that there is a constant battle to control one's own life. Bob Dylan illustrates a real idea of lack of power or control in “The Ballad of Emmett Till.” “The reason they killed him there, and I'm sure it's not a lie, was just for the thrill of killing him and watching him die slowly. (Because he was born a black-skinned boy, he was born to die.)” (11-12). Bob Dylan depicts the simple concept perceived by white people. The phrase “he was born to die” says that his life's purpose was to be raised like an animal destined for the slaughter. In the era of depression, inequality and social movements, people's brains were trapped in the vision that some had no future. Creating a sort of vacuum effect that takes power away from those who need it most. By now this can also be noticed; whether it's a government, a corporation, or a single person taking power from another. When one person takes power from another, it is considered bullying, but when it starts to involve their race, it becomes something more. This can be seen in T...... middle of paper ......ng message. They manage to leave real-world ideas and experiences to help us connect. Bob Dylan manages to express Emmet's inferiority in his ballad because he was in the wrong place at the wrong time. To Kill A Mockingbird and A Raisin In The Sun both demonstrate a lack of power and control over one's life in the form of racial inequality. Tom was accused of a crime he didn't commit simply because the white voice is more powerful. Mom was trying to get her family out of the hole and the laws just clamped down on her. This is why there have been so many civil movements for equality. Work Cited Dylan, Bob. "The Ballad of Emmett Till". bobdylan.com, nd Web. April 3, 2014 Lee, Harper. To kill a mockingbird.
