In his presidential farewell address, President Dwight D. Eisenhower warned the American public, and by extension, the world, about the future role of the military- industrial if it was not controlled. In the 21st century, the consequences of a rapidly evolving military machine are being felt, particularly with recent developments in the field of robotics. The problematic issue, however, lies in the role of technology as the driving factor behind this Revolution in Military Affairs (RME), and how it was complicated by the threat of dispersal across the massive expanse of 'Internet. Japanese popular culture – accustomed to integrating technology in both entertaining and critical ways into its products – offers an interesting perspective through which to approach these topics. As such, this article will analyze the effect of technology and scientific research on the application of violence by the state and by independent actors strictly in terms of human enhancements in the Metal Gear video game series Solid by Kojima Hideo, Ghost in the Shell: Stand by Kamiyama Kenji. Alone Complex and Ghost in the Shell: SAC 2nd GIG, as well as the anime series Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood based on the manga by Arakawa Hiromi. These series are well suited to the topic in question due to their diverse presentations. There we find the fruits of technological innovations used by and towards different types of actors: states, groups, organizations, factions, marginalized people, resistance fighters, etc. Additionally, the worlds of MGS, FMA, and GITS encompass a variety of organic, synthetic, and combined life forms, presenting an epoch or transition rather than an alternate universe or fully mechanized future...... middle of paper ... ...om Laboratory to open conflicts.
