Essay / Sexual Self-Discovery in Fun Home by Allison Bechdel even ; Furthermore, Bechdel depicts the plethora of factors that play a vital role in shaping who she is before, during, and after her sexual personal development. Bechdel's anguish and pain begins with all the stories she experienced at home, with a respective family member – and especially her father – at school and in the community in which she grew up. Bechdel's arduous process in her queer sexual development is throughout the novel as complex as her subjectivity itself. The main points highlight the difficulties that lie mainly in the dynamic between her and her father. Throughout the novel, she highlights numerous stories in which she felt lost and ashamed about coming out and having the courage to express it to her parents. Many events and factors have contributed to this development that many seem to fear. In her novel, Bechdel's complex personal development is a powerful struggle for her to understand and recognize her sexual orientation. One can simply observe the pain and struggle that Bechdel encountered in her process of personal development, especially in one of her monologues when she discusses the impact of discovering her father's homosexual habits in his past. She says: "Just four months earlier (following her father's suicide), I had made an announcement to my parents: 'I'm a lesbian,' but it was such a thorough and compelling assumption that I couldn't see no reason not to share it immediately… My homosexuality then remained a purely theoretical and unverified hypothesis” (Bechdel 58). After receiving the news that his father was... middle of paper... within his house. Within her own home, Alison was not comfortable being herself; in fact, she sometimes felt like she had almost no say in the choice of items such as clothing. It was also quite complex in terms of its subjectivity. Instances such as when Bruce wanted Alison to wear a particular dress to a wedding, or when he insisted that she wear a particular set of pearls, would play a central role in her sexual development. Other factors such as her relationship with her girlfriend and the news she would learn after her father's death also seemed to play an important role. Alison Bechdel's struggle with her sexual self-development has been full of anguish and pain due to all of its complexities, but she now has the confidence in herself and her sexuality to showcase in her eloquent and impactful graphic novel, Fun Home..
