  • Essay / Final Skills Portfolio-Pre-Med - 662

I am pursuing my Bachelor of Science in Chemistry with a concentration in Pre-Med. I hope to transfer to medical school once I complete my bachelor's degree. After taking the Strong Interests Inventory, I learned that I am investigative, social, and conventional; I learned that my two main areas of interest are science and medical science; and I learned that a doctor and a chemist are in my top ten professions. After learning all of this, it confirmed to me that pursuing medicine was the right choice for me. If medical school doesn't work out, I plan to pursue a Master of Science in Chemical Engineering. The reason I chose this as my backup plan is because it requires many of the same skills that a doctor would need. Chemical engineers must have adequate problem-solving and critical thinking skills to be successful (“Essential Skills”). These are skills that are taught from a young age but take an incredibly long time to master. These skills were present in my Strong Interest Inventory as part of my highest themes. All of these things pointed to a Master of Science in Chemical Engineering because I love chemistry. I was fortunate to find a backup plan that I was happy with, even though my goal is still to get into medical school. There are a variety of skills that I will need to develop to succeed as a physician. Doctors generally have "a concern for people, an inquisitive mind, an interest in people, a rational approach, an open mind, imagination, determination and humility" ("Doctors"). These skills are essential to success and are things I need to work on. Throughout this course, I have already started to develop some of these skills. ...... middle of paper ...... to help me in my understanding of people and how they work. I can also take two semesters of language in order to have the knowledge if the situation arises while I work in a hospital. I currently volunteer at the Mayo Clinic; in doing so, I am developing hands-on clinical experience that will help me determine whether becoming a physician is the appropriate choice for me. This will also help me connect with people currently working in the medical field. I will be volunteering for the entire four years I attend UNF. Works cited “Doctors: required skills”.
