Essay / The September 11 attack on the World Trade Center
In the early 1960s, the executive director of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, Austin J Tobin, presented the proposal for a complex of giant skyscrapers to accommodate much-needed office space in Lower Manhattan. The project initially encountered considerable opposition, but Tobin's proposal was eventually successful and Japanese American Minoru Yamasaki was commissioned to design the building. Yamasaki has projected a new design for a development comprising two 110-story “twin towers.” When completed in 1971, they were the tallest towers in the world, a record the infrastructure held for two years. The magnificent World Trade Center complex, which in 2001 included five other buildings in addition to the iconic Twin Towers, occupied six and a half hours. half hectare and provides offices for approximately 50,000 people. In addition, around 40,000 business visitors and tourists were expected there every day. In addition to offices, the World Trade Center housed a hotel, a police station, the tallest restaurant in New York, "Windows of the World", snack bars and an underground shopping center. At approximately 400 meters in height, tourists could enjoy spectacular views at 70,000 meters, atop the world's highest aerial observation deck located on the South Tower. Beneath the complex, parking lots and subway tunnels would accommodate the daily flow of traffic. The twin towers of the World Trade Center have quickly become a symbol of commerce in the United States.
