    Hacker is professor emeritus of political science at Queens College in New York. Dreifus teaches international affairs and media at Columbia University. They both have academic backgrounds and can interact with students regarding finances, etc. They both went on a mission to ask questions and interview higher education leaders, policymakers and students across the country. Their conclusion: “Colleges are taking on too many roles and doing none of them well.” They number in the thousands and are dedicated to everything from esoteric research to professional training, and have lost track of their core mission of challenging the minds of young people. Higher education has become a colossus—a $420 billion industry—immune to security and in need of reform” (180). They give more than the problem. They want to improve student learning as
