Maybe feeling like there's no point in living your life. Family and gender roles were different in Caesar's time than today. In Caesar's time, people played different roles based on their gender. According to later Roman law, the Roman father, or paterfamilias, was a powerful guy in the family. He had almost unlimited powers within his family. One of these powers was the power of life and death over his children, meaning that at birth he could choose to raise or kill them or later he could punish them through execution. Another power was complete control over his daughters until he married them off to someone. Roman men censored the fact that wealthy women were more concerned with their own figures and luxury than with their families.
