  • Essay / Changes in social psychology in the foreseeable future

The future of social psychology is changing, as it has since its origins in the 1800s. In the 1970s, there was a revolution based on cognition and requiring more diverse methods and best data analysis techniques. In the 1980s, attention shifted to evolutionary psychology and the famous topics of love and relationships. The 1990s seemed to focus on the brain – evolutionary psychology and social neuroscience. The 2000s were marked by the influence of culture: the Internet and non-conscious approaches. Topics in modern times seem to be expanding with positive psychology, religion, intergroup relations and bias, emotions, social cognition, terrorism, and as topics within the field of social psychology expand, discipline itself is also expanding. Social psychology includes social neuroscience, culture and how it evolves and affects members of society, spatial analysis, and multidisciplinary research involving law, health, business, and education. I believe that the future of social psychology will be more open in the future due to the increase in cross-cultural research and the progression of technology and culture within our society (Martin and Kirschner, 2010) . The shift to big data will mean that research design will change and become more algorithm-driven (SPSP, 2015a). Social psychologists have much to offer on this shift facing social media and how modern culture is becoming increasingly dependent on the use of the Internet for social exchange (Haidt, 2011). Culture plays an important role that impacts most decisions we make; Some of the decisions that our culture influences are: the food we eat, the clothes we wear, the house we live in, and the technology we choose to use (Matsumoto, D, 1999). Many people do not see culture, but it is already embedded in their lives and their environment (Matsumoto, V, 1993). Multiculturalism plays a role in the future of social psychology because it allows groups of people to understand different cultures. Through cross-cultural research, social psychologists are able to study diverse cultures (SPSP, 2015c). Another important change that will occur in the foreseeable future for social psychology concerns predictive research design studies (SPSP, 2015c). Statistical models from previous studies could be used to predict unobserved results that will be collected in the future and simulations could be inspected from regression models from an old sample which could then be applied to data collected from a new sample; if social psychologists adopt and use these prediction methods, it could be extremely revolutionary for the field (SPSP, 2015c). Keep in mind: this is just a sample. Get a personalized article from our expert writers now.
