Essay / The dynamics facing today's managers are different...
Scientific management is one of the best ways to get work done and improve worker efficiency (Robbins, 1994 , p.32). Frederick Winslow Taylor was known for applying scientific management because he was very time conscious, there are 2 other people who helped Taylor a lot in formalizing scientific management, they were: Frank & Lillian Gilbreth and Henry Gantt.1.0 Frederick Winslow Taylor1. 1 Beginning of scientific managementF.W. Taylor began scientific management during the Second Industrial Revolution that began in 1850, which saw the development of steam-powered ships and railways, as well as the development of electrical power generation. Taylor was born in 1856, he rose through the ranks from worker to chief engineer for over 6 years (Bartol, Margaret, Graham and Martin, 2005, p.34), he then saw that managers were struggling to control workers so they work more efficiently and they deliberately work below their capacity, which could increase productivity, so-called soldiering. There are 3 causes for becoming a soldier: 1) They believed that if they became more productive, fewer of them would be needed and jobs would be lost. 2) The wage system has not motivated workers to work harder because they receive the same pay regardless of the quantity produced. Therefore, employees fear that management will decrease the salary if they set a new standard of a faster pace, which would result in an increase in quantity. 3) Workers have wasted much of their efforts by relying on empirical methods (Bartol et al, 2005, p.35).1.2 The principles
