    The film Schindler's List by Steven Spielberg is based on the life of Oskar Schindler during World War II and how he saved the lives of over 12 000 Jews. Spielberg uses diegetic and non-diegetic sounds, camera angles and shots, patterns and limited colors to create tension within the film. The tension builds in three specific scenes that also had an emotional impact on the audience. The liquidation of the ghetto created tension as the soldiers spoke in German throughout the scene. The Little Girl in the Red Coat created tension by adding color and carrying her through the chaos unnoticed. Ultimately, Auschwitz created tension using camera angles and stringed instruments. Tension is created within the liquidation of the ghetto by Amon Goeth's "inspirational" speech which is used to motivate the German soldiers. The speech suggests that history is about to be written and that something serious will happen to the Jewish people. Once the “Final Solution” began, Jews took to the streets and their property was confiscated. People are being shot for no reason and despite what is happening; doctors and nurses give poison to terminally ill patients so they don't suffer. The people who were hiding were found and shot. Spielberg uses diegetic sound throughout this scene to create emotion in the audience. Gunshots and a sense of mourning can be heard, creating tension due to the unknown fate of the survivors. The audience begins to wonder if he is going to a labor camp or a concentration camp. Panning is used to show every aspect that occurs throughout the liquidation. This shows the public the impact this had on the Jewish people. Amon Goeth's speech foreshadows that...... middle of paper ......r from white to black to represent the ashes. Throughout the film, trains are a motif of death and life. Earlier in the film, Mila Pfefferberg told the women the story of Auschwitz and no one believed her, they shaved their hair and with Stars of David on the doors. This foreshadowed the horrific events that occurred while the women were in Auschwitz and what actually happened to many Jews. This created tension by keeping the audience guessing as to what is happening behind the walls of Auschwitz.
