Essay / Candide, by Voltaire - 795
Somewhere in the world, a car is stolen, a child is stolen from its mother's handbag, or a bank is robbed. Why do people steal and take things for themselves? Often, greed is the reason why a person participates in such an act. The trait of greed cannot be perceived through appearance but rather through human behaviors themselves. In Voltaire's Candide, greed is expressed satirically through the actions of the novel's characters. Through this trait, people are driven to make sacrifices and believe that happiness and satisfaction are only achieved when they enrich themselves with wealth. Risking one's life is one of many concepts that arise when greed is at play. An example of this idea is presented by Lady Cunégonde, daughter of the barons. “Who could have stolen my moidores and my diamonds? » cried Cunegonde, bursting into tears. “What are we going to live on? What should we do? Where will I find other Inquisitors and Jews to replace them? (46). Voltaire uses the irony of the situation to show Lady Cunégonde's desire for wealth and her willingness to risk her own life by finding another Jew and inquisitor who will accommodate her with riches. Instead of being happy and relieved to finally be free from the misery of being shared by two men, she is more concerned with finding another Jew and inquisitor, whom she does not like, just to receive more money and diamonds. On the other hand, the sailor also sacrifices a life. While he, Candide, Pangloss, James the Anabaptist and other passengers were heading towards Lisbon, a shipwreck occurred and caused James to fall into the sea. "The Anabaptist being in the middle of the article, it is a trait because it is an influencing factor that pushes humans to make unwise decisions in order to satisfy their beneficial needs. Voltaire's attitude towards greed is that everyone has within themselves the capacity to be selfish, regardless of their condition and social class. People don't always realize how detrimental the effects of greed can be until something tragic happens in their lives. . People can be greedy for materials, power or money. In the long run, all types of greed can lead to a corrupt society, as people may end up fighting just to get what they want, or making sacrifices that can be detrimental not only to themselves, but also to others. If greed in people were a puzzle, it will forever remain incomplete until the missing piece of contentment is found through what they long to have..
