Often, greed is the reason why a person participates in such an act. The trait of greed cannot be perceived through appearance but rather through human behaviors themselves. In Voltaire's Candide, greed is expressed satirically through the actions of the novel's characters. Through this trait, people are driven to make sacrifices and believe that happiness and satisfaction are only achieved when they enrich themselves with wealth. Risking one's life is one of many concepts that arise when greed is at play.
