  • Essay / My choice of Gallaudet University - 1064

My choice of Gallaudet UniversityI was born deaf to deaf parents. I attended a school for the deaf from the beginning of kindergarten until I graduated from high school. I grew up using ASL (American Sign Language) as my primary language and English as a secondary language. ASL is the visual-gestural language that best suits my communication needs, as it does for most deaf people. I grew up in deaf culture and the deaf world. Everyone knows that I am very involved in the deaf community and am always encouraged by several people, including my parents and my vocational rehabilitation counselor, to attend Gallaudet University. Gallaudet is a university for the education of the deaf and hard of hearing. It is located northeast of Washington DC. It is the first school created for the advanced education of deaf and hard of hearing people in the world. It is still the only university in the world where students learn primarily in ASL. There are many deaf, hard of hearing, and hearing people (ASL learners) who come to Gallaudet from other states and countries. I wanted to go to Gallaudet University since I was young. There are a large number of reasons why I chose to attend Gallaudet University. First of all, Gallaudet University has the greatest benefit for deaf people like me because it starts with a barrier-free communication environment. Everyone signs at Gallaudet University and it's all visual. Gallaudet is truly unique. (Simms) The communication environment at Gallaudet University offers me freedom and great comfort
