    Ability grouping is a common practice in today's classrooms of using intelligence tests to place individuals into certain academic groups with others with the same abilities. There are two types of ability grouping: cross-class and within-class grouping, which present both benefits and obstacles in a classroom. When a school or teacher groups students “based on ability or achievement,” the school practices abilities between classes. grouping (Santrock 125). In many cases, cross-class ability grouping is used in a high school to group students with similar goals and skills. On the surface, ability grouping across classes appears to benefit all students because it allows teachers to better teach students in a more focused way. However, researchers have determined that this form of grouping harms those who belong to a lower ability group (125). Recently, while helping out at a low-performing high school, this form of grouping was clearly evident. Students were clearly divided into classes based on their abilities. Each class reviewed the same material, but each teacher taught the material differently to meet the needs of that group of students. The history class, considered an advanced placement class, ran much more smoothly and students had a good understanding of the subject as well as appropriate behavior. However, "average" history classes were a bit more chaotic and students had little or no interest in the subject. This example I witnessed showed how grouping abilities across classes benefits those in a “higher lane” and leaves those in lower classes behind. Students in “low track” classes are generally from an average class of paper ......e. Much of school, especially in the early years of school, is helping children understand how to express their emotions appropriately. This strategy helps all students, but especially emotional students, because they need to understand how to convey to the teacher and other classmates what they are feeling without a burst of specific emotion. As a teacher, it is important to adopt many strategies to help teach. children based on different temperaments. When teaching different temperaments, it is important to pay attention to all students individually, which is greatly beneficial to students of all temperaments.
