The Harry Potter series written by JK Rowling has recently come to life in many ways. The first book in the series, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, was published in 1998 in the United States (Rowling) and has been growing ever since. First day sales of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows sold 11 million copies worldwide, which certainly reflects the Harry Potter fan base (Gunelius, 76). Fans of this series, also known as the Harry Potter fandom, have taken the series into their own hands by using their creativity to bring elements of the series to life. It's becoming a whole subculture that fans have created from the Harry Potter series, but who are these people and what do they do? Some fans bring parts of the story to life through cosplay, while others engage in the human (or "muggle") version of the game of Quidditch, and some fans even create their own quidditch subplots. Harry Potter writing fan fiction. Looking at the vast subculture of Harry Potter, die-hard fans take it to the next level by bringing Harry Potter to life. As we tie together all the little subcultures that are within the Harry Potter subculture itself, we notice that it is an interpretation of the series that fans are transposing it into the world real. Whether it comes from the movies or the books, fans go to extremes when it comes to Harry Potter. To summarize the three different fan interpretations, we see that for each of them, they showed a way to bring the world of Harry Potter into the real world. Next, we look at fans who cosplay.
