  • Essay / The Alfred Dreyfus Affair - 1075

The Alfred Dreyfus AffairThe Alfred Dreyfus Affair was a political and legal scandal in 1894-1906. The case divided the French political landscape and considered an extreme case of miscarriage of justice, and developed worldwide and modern recognition. This affair resulted in the conviction of Alfred Dreyfus for treason. He was an artillery officer of Alsatian Jewish origin. Alfred was allegedly guilty of spying for the German government after some letters appeared in the trash of military attachés. As a result, Alfred was sentenced to life in prison and served time in prison on Devil's Island (Burns, p. 73). Two years later, the real culprit turned out to be a French army major named Ferdinand Walsin Esterhazy. Senior military officials carried out a cover-up and acquitted Esterhazy of all charges after appealing in the second trial. Ironically, more charges piled up against Alfred while he was still serving time in prison. The cover-up by the military was revealed to the public through Émile Zola's open letter (J'accuse) in the Paris newspaper in 1898. The letter sparked interest among activists who pushed the government to re-examine the case. The pressure paid off and in 1899 Alfred Dreyfus was tried again. Meanwhile, intense legal and political scandals have escalated and divided the French country into two opposing groups. One group supported the mainly anticlerical Alfred Deyfrus (the Dreyfusards) and the others who supported the government mainly Catholic (the anti-Dreyfusards). The government later dropped all charges against him and exonerated him to the post of major in the French army. The case fueled a deep political division in the country and generated worldwide interest and represented the middle of the paper (cover of the slip) in the Alfred Dreyfus affair. The Jewish officer was prosecuted solely on the basis of anti-Semitic and malicious allegations and represented the epitome of the dysfunction of the justice system in France and around the world. In conclusion, the Alfred Dreyfus affair represents a historical overview of past injustices that occurred due to prejudice against the Jewish community. The main drivers of this affair were anti-Semitic opinions, military reasons and the discovery of the Bordereau. The case began with the unjust prosecution of a military artillery captain of Alsatian Jewish origin for espionage allegations. Later, the country divided into two political fronts, one supporting Dreyfus and the other against him. The main force behind this case was the widespread anti-Semitic tendency that demonized the Jewish community..
