    India as a nation has evolved immensely during the 20th and 21st centuries. Due to the effects of colonization, economic liberalization and globalization, India has been influenced by Western political, social and commercial principles. One of the main ways Western influence has affected India is through its films. While Indian cinema encompasses a wide variety of film genres, this article will primarily focus on Bollywood, which may sometimes be referred to as Hindi films or masala films. In this article, I will examine how Western influences exist in film advertising, film sets and brand placement in Hindi films and how these influences are all attributed to the Westernization of Bollywood films. In order to understand how these three factors have been attributed to the Westernization of Bollywood films, I will provide historical context on Indian and Hindi films. Next, I will provide information on the role of each factor in the westernization of Hindi films. To begin with, India is a country in South Asia and was under British rule for a long time until its independence in 1947 (Shedde 25). After gaining independence, Western culture made its entry into Indian culture in the form of cinema. The origin of cinema in the West was shortly followed by its origins in India, with its first motion pictures shown in 1896 in the city that would become the center of the national film industry, Bombay (Dwyer and Patel 13, 19 ).
