The primary purpose of this article was to explain the benefits that group members might experience from using therapeutic letters in a group counseling setting. The article discusses how counselors can use therapeutic letters with addicts who experience resistance and ambivalence within a counseling group. The primary goal of this study was to explain the impact of therapy letters on drug addicts, who exhibit negative behaviors or attitudes toward treatment and appear to have a desire to change, but are not quite determined to change (Hagedorn, 2011). The study measured how the implementation of an experiential activity, in this case the therapeutic letter called "letter to my substance", can be beneficial for addicts in a counseling group. However, the article also walks readers through the technique and provides examples to understand the approach more clearly. Additionally, the author explained that the therapeutic letter can be beneficial to other clients who are experiencing problems with sex, gambling, and eating disorders (Hagedorn, 2011). In this article, Hagedorn (2011) mentions that resistance and ambivalence to change are not only a problem that counselors may encounter in an addict group, but it may also be encountered in many others counseling groups whose members struggle with different issues, such as depression or anxiety. Although resistance and ambivalence may be observed among members of counseling groups, group leaders have a responsibility to explore the issue with group members using experiential activities or other beneficial approaches within the group. . Hagedorn (2011) explained that an exploration of the benefits of writing therapeutic letters for substance...... middle of paper ...... as well as samples and an explanation of the process a counselor should follow up with this activity in a group setting. It is important to mention that while this article provides information and steps to follow, a group leader should understand and seek more information about the narrative therapy process before implementing this activity with group members. This article made me realize the importance of group leaders having the emotional maturity to handle all the mixed emotions that addicts may experience while using this activity and being aware of their emotional reactions to what is being processed by members of the group at any time.
