  • Essay / Importance of the Liberal Arts Degree - 1572

A degree that Sanford J. Ungar, author of “The New Liberal Arts,” says is very influential is a liberal arts degree. Sanford asserts that “an increasing number of businesses are run by people with liberal arts degrees” (228). He also states that “more than three-quarters of our nation’s employers recommend that students seeking college pursue a liberal education” (228). This shows Sanford's belief that liberal arts degrees are very valuable to the career field. Not only are liberal arts degrees useful in one career field, they also allow graduates to pursue multiple careers without being limited to a single career path. Although liberal arts degrees can be very beneficial to a student's future career, "a large proportion of people who are theoretically capable of absorbing a liberal education have no interest in doing so" (240), states Charles Murray. One reason for this is that a liberal education may not involve the specific skills a student seeks to acquire when pursuing a future career. Rather, a liberal arts degree aims to allow the student to think outside the box to recreate the world around them.
