  • Essay / Significance of Columbus Day - 1189

Columbus Day is a holiday celebrated every year, every October, across the country. This day celebrates the anniversary of the arrival of Christopher Columbus in America. It also remembers the discovery of America, which occurred on October 12, 1492. Many people believe that this day should be celebrated because it was the beginning of America and its history. Others believe that even though Columbus' arrival was the beginning, this day should not be celebrated because of his horrible actions. As more information about Columbus was revealed over the years, discrepancies over whether he was truly a hero emerged. Many have debated whether this holiday should be celebrated or not. Although there is much controversy, Columbus' discoverer of America was considered to have discovered the New World. Many saw this beginning of the New World, also as the beginning of Western civilization. Many believe that Columbus Day also serves to celebrate ideas, philosophers, scientists and other people belonging to civilization. The arrival of Columbus also brought the start of a new religion to the region, Christianity. Another reason why people celebrate this day is because they believe that Columbus influenced countless discoveries. Without Columbus's discovery of America, all of the ideas and historical events that occurred after the discovery may not have happened. Additionally, if it was a different person than Columbus, from another country, then the United States might be a completely different place. The country could have different languages, cultures and many other things, if it was not Columbus who discovered it. Although it was Columbus who brought attention to America, several other countries claimed land here. People use this day to celebrate the cultural achievements and diversity of the United States. The discovery resulted in "the cultural migration that followed resulted in the birth and explosive growth of the greatest nation in history: the United States of America." Many celebrate this day to commemorate the country's history and promote our Western civilization or what the country has done. Columbus hurt so many people, so I think he is a criminal, and criminals should not be celebrated. Even though his trip marked the beginning of Western civilization and American history, I still don't think he's worthy enough to vacation on. All the harm he has caused contradicts the few good things he has done. I believe this day should be about celebrating American history, culture, and achievements. Columbus took part in these things, but it was not entirely up to him and he does not define these things. Other people have contributed to the history, culture, and achievements of the United States, but these people are not celebrated. I think there are people who have shaped this country and done more for this country than Columbus who should be honored. I believe that Columbus Day should not be celebrated for the terrible things he did, and that what America has become is not simply due to
