Essay / Analysis of a Chronicle of a Death Foretold - 1027
Marquez criticizes the Catholic religion in A Chronicle of a Death Foretold through the hypocrisies of the city. The story takes place in a town with a strong emphasis on religion, but whose society relies on archaic honor rituals. Society and its religious leaders constantly defy the Catholic faith, which authorizes the brutal murder of Santiago Nasar. Through the hypocrisies shown in the chronicle of Santiago Nasar's death, Marquez shows the failures of the Catholic faith of Colombian culture as it negatively impacts the community. Marquez begins the description of the day of the assassination with the bishop's visit to the city. Through this visit, Marquez begins to show both the town's respect for the Catholic faith and the hypocrisy within the religion. The entire town prepared for the bishop's arrival with the hope that he would stay to bless the town, even though the bishop had never left his ship in the past. This irony of the situation shows respect for the town, as the community continues to prepare the town for the bishop's arrival even though he never stays. He only waves from his boat as he sails away from the city. This shows the hypocrisy of the Catholic religion, as the bishop does not like the city, even though Márquez gives no reason for the bishop not to, other than the fact that it was a small rural town. The bishop never stays in town and only makes brief appearances on the docks without even leaving his boat. This goes against the Catholic faith, as some of its core values are forgiveness and acceptance. By not visiting the city, the bishop is showing hypocrisy and is not practicing the values he preaches. Further evidence of the bishop's failure to help the city is that many people believe that...... middle of paper ......atment of Santiago Nasar. Marquez critiques Colombian culture's devotion to the Catholic faith through the city's culture in Chronicle of a Death Foretold. The town's society places a strong emphasis on the Catholic faith, manifested through the visit of the bishop, and views on premarital sex, but they defy their faith and resort to honor . Both the bishop and the father go against the religion they preach by not following Church values such as forgiveness, acceptance and respect. The townspeople also allowed the murder to happen by following the primitive social belief in honor and doing nothing to help Santiago Nasar, even though the entire town knew of Brother Vicario's plan. Overall, these examples show that the strong cultural belief in religion has a negative impact on the community as it leads to the brutal murder of Santiago Nasar..
