To establish a positive working relationship between the family and the social worker, it is important to establish a rapport so that the family feels comfortable before carrying out any assessment or commencing any work. The initial greeting with the family can be used to assess attitude toward receiving services, each individual's mood, and relationships among family members (Collins, 2013). Both Ms. Guillory and Darius seemed open and enthusiastic about the session we were having that day. I engaged the family using simple greetings and introductions. We began the conversation when I realized that Ms. Guillory was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. We immediately started bonding after learning we shared a fraternity. Later I learned that Darius was a member of a junior Masonic organization, so I had a lot to tell him as well. We all discussed our experiences within the Masonic family and shared stories with each other. After establishing our connections, we moved on to what they could expect from the session. I explained that anything we discussed would be completely confidential, unless there was any mention of harm to anyone. As a nurse, Ms. Guillory already knew and understood this rule. I had emailed Ms. Guillory a copy of the assessment, so it was already completed. The purpose of the assessment was to gather information about the family that could be used for intervention. Gathering information is one of the many purposes of family assessments. The assessments are also used to determine what problems they want to resolve and what changes need to be made. Other goals include goal setting, determining family strengths and resources, and understanding how the family functions (Collins, 2013)...... middle of article.... .. “African American Elders, Cultural Traditions, and the Reunion Family.” Generations Fall 2011 35.3 (2011): 16-21.
