  • Essay / Essential Elements for Success on a Deserted Island - 1405

Imagine being stranded on a desolate island with no help in sight. The only resources available are the clothes on your back and the will to survive. Being stranded and surviving is not an impossible thing to do. There are rules for survival; knowing is only half the battle. When you're stuck, always try to have the three essentials: water, food and shelter. These necessities are not that difficult to acquire when you know where and how to get them. Some of the basic knowledge for survival is simply knowing a few good useful knots. The four most important knots are the One-Handed Bowline Knot, the Taut-Line Hitch Knot, the Double Fisherman's Knot and finally the Power Cinch Knot. All of this serves a specific purpose to make survival even easier (Black). The One Handed Bowline is used to attach a line to a fixed point. The Taut-Line hitch is used to install a shelter; it is used to make lines tighter and can be adjusted. The double fisherman's knot allows you to join two pieces of rope together to form a longer rope or to make an adjustable loop of these two knots. Finally, the Power Cinch Knot, this knot serves the same purpose as the Taut-Line hitch, but it is so much easier to untie and tie. (Black) After learning these knots and perhaps a few others, learn how to make and understand traps and snares to obtain food. There are several different traps and snares available, most of which are intended for small mammals, for example squirrels and rabbits. So, decide what needs to be caught and set a suitable trap for that particular animal. For faster results when capturing the animal, set it up in high traffic areas in the area. To find the most frequented area, look for trails, tracks, droppings (or droppings), chewed or rubbed vegetation, nesting or roosting sites, food and water......at middle of paper ...... and adventure.
