Essay / Comparing the greatest story ever told and the dream...
Dream of the Rood takes a traditional approach; “I have been stained by sins, wounded by guilt” (13). The narrator realizes that he is miserable over the cross and the reader should feel the same way. Usually made of wood, with splinters, the cross appears old and dirty. He further comments that the cross was given the honor “of being worthily the tree of the Creator” (17). Likewise, in The Greatest Story Ever Told, we are shown the cross and its age, but it still has the honor of holding the savior. Dream of the Rood uses the cross to represent the community that has done nothing to help Christ and we should “look with sorrow upon the Savior’s tree” (25). “As we stood there, weeping” (70) shows the unity needed to make the film effective. The same thing is seen at GSET, the crowd stands up and looks at the crucified Christ, but they do nothing to stop it. Ultimately, both works represent our need to identify with the crucifixion
