Essay / Free Essay on The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne...
Good versus evil in The Scarlet Letter The Scarlet Letter is a wonderful and not-so-traditional example of the theme of good versus evil. What makes this a unique example of good versus evil is that each side can be seen as one or the other. Hester could very easily have been inferred as evil, or as "wicked", as she was by the townspeople. In other words, she was found guilty of adultery, a horrible sin of the time. As for the punishment, a sentence of wearing a scarlet "A" on one's chest, it would hardly be considered an extreme burden or punishment in this day and age. Another sin that Hester committed was the fact that she never revealed who the father of her child, Pear, was, forcing her to be left without a father. Hester's silence also caused Dimmesdale to live in torture every day. Chillingsworth was also hurt by Hester's act of adultery and because of her, his life was destroyed and the only thing he could do was take revenge on the man who had been with her. Hester's child, Pearl, had to be raised by a single parent and this made the child less disciplined and more scandalous, which made the townspeople more suspicious of the identity of the child's father. child. This also caused religious leaders to question the child's religious stability and whether there could be witchcraft involved, "The little baggage has witchcraft in it" (p112). Hester also caused many sleepless nights in Dimmesdale. If Hester had just announced that Dimmesdale was her father, he would never have experienced all the guilt she had forced him into. Dimmesdale was a weak and fragile man because of Hester's silence. Chillengsworth was driven into a life of vengeance and anguish ever since Hester had betrayed their marriage and Chillengsworth's trust in her. She had transformed Chillengsworth into a demon: “I already told you what I am, a demon!” (P169). Hester admits to tricking Chillengsworth into becoming the demon as well. The guilt rests solely on Hester Prynne for destroying not only her own life because of this sin, but also many others such as Minister Dimmesdale, Doctor Chillengsworth and her own daughter Pearl..
