The hidden meaningBefore the 20th century, women were discriminated against by men in their work and freedom. Men and women had different opinions and perspectives towards women in 19th century society. “The Yellow Wallpaper,” published in 1892 by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, a prominent American feminist, wrote short stories from a woman's point of view. The narrator of “Yellow Wallpaper” begins the story by describing the house where her husband took her for their summer vacation. The male dominations over women, the treatment of the narrator isolated in a small room, and the yellow wallpaper caused the narrator's mind to collapse. The narrator has few rights to express his opinions throughout the story. John was portrayed as a villain in "The Yellow Wallpaper" and exerts strong dominance over the narrator. As John is a traditional doctor, he follows step by step the treatment of the narrator's depression from the book which went horribly wrong. Furthermore, by combining the authority of a doctor and that of the narrator's husband, John ignored the narrator's opinion on the matter, forcing her to hide her feelings about the reasons for her depressions. The narrator believes that: if a high-ranking doctor and your own husband assure your friends and relatives that there is really nothing wrong with you, except a temporary nervous breakdown - a slight tendency hysterical – what to do? . . . So I take phosphates or phosphites, whatever they are, tonics, travel, air and exercise, and I am absolutely forbidden to "work" until I am well. . From the wife's perspective, John was portrayed as a villain because he refused and ignored his wife's request regarding the wallpaper. Being trapped in an isolated room with yellow wallpaper and being dominated in society drove the narrator crazy..
