  • Essay / The importance of fictional elements in writing a short story...

The elements of fiction are the most important things in writing a short story. Each element represents a different explanation and interpretation of the meanings that the author wishes to convey to the reader. Meaning also tried to deliver to the reader Dorothy Parker through fictional elements of a short story called "A Telephone Call". The elements of fiction itself have several main parts: plot, character, setting, point of view, language, tone, style, theme and also symbol. All of these parts really depend on the thinking and experience of the author or writer which usually refers to the context. For example, there is Kate Chopin, a well-known American author of short stories and novels. She has a background as a writer who often writes short stories or novels based on the influence of French Creole life. All this happened because she grew up in a traditional French Creole family who imported their customs and traditions from France, Louisiana, to the United States. This also happened to Dorothy Parker, she trained as a writer who was interested in urban weaknesses in America. In the short story “A Telephone Call,” for example, Dorothy Parker focuses more on feminism, gender, and sexuality. The elements of fiction I will explain in this essay focus on characterization, plot (story structure), tone, and setting. First there is characterization. The main character's first impression is that she is religious, because she often prayed to God and begged him over and over to ask God to make the man she loves call her, the nun herself- even became a portrait of capsule, as we know, inside the capsule there is composition of the medicine. Here is the analogy, inside the capsule which is religious there are characteristics...... middle of paper ...... history is the place where history happens and the moment where is happening. Characters interact with the setting to show and tell a story. Coming back to the story, the location provided by the author is at the woman's house (main character's house), it could be the room in which people usually put the phone at home. The setting time is late afternoon to early evening, it is indicated by a line: It is ten past seven. He said he would call at five o'clock. “I’ll call you at five, honey.” The element of fiction represents the difference in explanation and interpretation of the meanings that the author wants to convey to the reader. Dorothy Parker through fictional elements of a short story titled “A Telephone Call” succeeds in conveying meanings to the reader. The elements of fiction I explained in this essay were characterization, plot (story structure), tone, and setting..
