Essay / The Importance of Clinical Psychology - 1125
We may have learned a lot from past mistakes, but we still have a lot of research to do in order to further increase the effectiveness of various therapies. Psychologists now recognize that there are many disorders and that each may require a completely separate type of therapy. This awareness has given rise to many specialties and areas of interest. Indeed, the term “clinical psychology” is now too simple and too general. Therapists may specialize in humanistic therapy, a type of therapy focused on the client's self-realization. Another therapist might specialize in cognitive behavioral therapy, where they might encourage a client to dissect their thoughts and feelings with the goal of changing behavior. We live in exciting times in clinical psychology because we have many resources: we can analyze our past, recognizing the legacy of clinical practice, while simultaneously recognizing new therapeutic techniques and new specialties. Ultimately, as long as practitioners continue to improve the client experience, this forward movement will strengthen our practice and, in turn, strengthen society as a society.
