Essay / Essay on Splendid Suns - 602
Reading this novel is not an easy task because of all the abuse the woman suffers. The Taliban are one of the main contributors to these acts of violence. This group applies a number of restrictions that make daily life a nightmare for these Afghan women. Additionally, women who visit these countries are also affected because the Taliban makes few exceptions for women in general. For example, if a woman visited this country, she would not be allowed to drive a vehicle. It doesn't matter to the Taliban that she is an American, they will still try to enforce their laws. One of the major restrictions that must be recognized is the ban on women working outside the home. The Taliban are afraid to let these Afghan women compete with them, otherwise why would they adopt such harsh and restrictive laws? As many of us in America have realized, many women can outperform men in the job market. There is no doubt that many Afghan women would thrive in the workforce, but they simply have no opportunities to do so. In addition to this restriction, Afghan women must be with a mahram (a close male relative) for any activity outside the home. These women truly have no freedom under Taliban law. Another major restriction is that women are not allowed to receive any type of education. As if not being able to work outside the home wasn't enough, the Taliban ensures that these women cannot succeed outside the home by depriving them of schooling. Only certain women are allowed to work outside the home, usually only doctors. A 35-year-old widow in Kabul says: “Afghan women's lives are so bad. We are locked in our homes and cannot see the sun. » Imagine not being able...... middle of paper ...... without their mahram. This makes it even more difficult for women to leave the house and go somewhere. All of these laws are intended to prevent women from becoming their own people and succeeding in the real world. The Taliban banned many rights that women today take for granted. It is impossible to bring together the long list of laws against women in a single document. It is clear that Afghan women are discriminated against and mistreated in every way. Women don't deserve to be treated so badly. A sane person realizes that these laws are completely unjust and wrong. With more people becoming aware of the situation, we hope that these Afghan women will see improvements in their daily lives.
