The Very Insecure Great GatsbyIn F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel The Great Gatsby, many characters are not what they seem. The character that intrigues me the most is James Gatsby. In the story, Gatsby is always seen as wealthy, confident, and very popular. However, when I picture him in my mind, I see someone very different. In fact, I see the opposite of what everyone describes. I see someone who has very little self-confidence and who is trying to fit in as best he can. There are several scenes in which this observation seems very obvious to me. It is clear that Gatsby is not the man everyone makes him out to be. One scene that clearly shows the real Gatsby is when he meets Daisy at Nick's house. He is very nervous and wants everything to be perfect for Daisy. To me this shows that he is really addicted to what other people think. He wants to impress them as best he can. Clearly, Gatsby has little self-confidence and feels the need to overwhelm people with an appearance opposite of his personality. When Gatsby and Nick go out on the town, Gatsby took his yellow Rolls Royce, which is a beautiful car. Gatsby wanted to impress Nick and everyone else in town with his awesome car. Once again this shows how Gatsby uses objects to attract attention and not his personality. The scene that most shows Gatsby's lack of confidence is when he throws his elaborate parties with all the fancy decorations and amazing food. So many people come to his parties and all the while he is never there. He never comes down to greet or welcome anyone. He never comes down to see his guests to see how things are going and if they're having a good time. Gatsby always spends time alone in a room looking at everyone. He waits, hoping for Daisy to appear. Gatsby is built to be a great man. He is considered extremely wealthy and handsome, with a lot of confidence..
