Essay / Racial Harmony Week - 1404
Racial tensions are one of the major problems in the United States today. For several centuries, this has been an internal problem in this country that has caused racial conflict and disunity among people. Many people think that racism is a thing of the past. However, racial tensions are still endemic in this country and many others. These kinds of issues affect us all, especially minorities. If issues of racial discrimination and tensions are not resolved, minorities risk feeling treated differently. The main thing is not to neglect the different races and cultures that make up the community, but to accept our differences and have mutual respect between races in order to live in harmony. As promoters of youth, institutions should encourage mutual understanding and tolerance between races by organizing a Racial Harmony Week event that brings together people from different ethnic and cultural backgrounds to participate in activities promoting mutual understanding and respect among students of all races and cultures. Even though racial tensions have improved significantly in recent decades, many people remain racist, which in turn leads to racial tensions. According to statenews.com, there have been several racial incidents on the campus of Michigan State University. The statenews.com article also reported on an incident in which students found a piece of paper containing derogatory remarks on the dorm door of a 20-year-old female student. A few days after this incident, students discovered another racial incident, this time a racial slur on a wall in Butterfield Hall, one of MSU's buildings. There was also a black doll hanging by its neck in the Biomedi...... middle of paper ... so well documented that after listing a few it starts to seem redundant. However, according to recent U.S. Census statistics, the median income for black families is approximately $38,000, compared to $62,000 for whites (2009), representing a marked difference ("The"). Likewise, other minority groups such as Hispanics also see a gap in median income compared to white Americans. Overall, Racial Harmony Week is a positive event for students, staff and the community at large. Not only does this help the community immerse itself in a deeper understanding and respect of other cultures, but it also brings the community together to work and participate in events. Through research and preparation for events, students and staff will also be better informed about other races and cultures and will have the idea of racial harmony more deeply instilled in their minds..
