    Citizens of a democratic nation have a responsibility to be actively involved in their government and truly understand the rights and demands placed on them. The political and democratic community functions ideally when its citizens participate in informed decisions. It is a machine that functions properly when citizens understand their rights and responsibilities within their society. Citizens also need to be aware of political issues and truths. Democracy is not perfect and that is the reality when working with your citizens to help them understand their place in the political game. Society within a democratic nation functions by understanding the rights of all involved as well as the allocation of resources within their community, state, and nation. However, the civic responsibilities of a nation's inhabitants are not only about the nation they support. but also on a global scale. This is a component of citizenship education that is lacking in current teaching, but is growing as nations become increasingly interdependent on one another and increasingly interconnected. Mansilla & Gardner (2007) discussed in depth the theme of "global awareness" where students would develop the ability to see themselves and the world around them, to be "aware" of global activity and capable “to direct their actions accordingly”. (p. 6) This concept is useful in the practice of global education in schools because it helps students understand the world around them and their place in it, rather than simply learning about the world and to always be reprehensible towards everything that happens on the "outside".
