Essay / Killing an Animal for Clothing - 2390
Imagine being beaten to death and painfully skinned alive. This scenario seems like it only happens in a horror movie, but in reality it happens daily. Looking at a fur coat through a store window or in a glossy magazine, one may not realize that animals have been beaten, electrocuted, crammed into filthy cages or even hanged just to produce a simple fur coat. Every year, millions of animals are abused and even killed for the fur on their backs. Society may think twice before wearing the corpse of an animal when we know what is really happening in the name of fashion. An immeasurable amount of suffering was caused by every fur-trimmed jacket, leather belt, or wool sweater hanging in his closet. To eradicate the unnecessary suffering of animals for fashion, wearing fur must be made illegal. When it comes to wool, we imagine an idyllic environment and sheep that naturally shed their coats or need to be cut to stay cool during the hot summer months, and we can believe that sheep experience this life until the last breath, but our imagination is far from the truth. Even though wool represents an industry that brings in several million dollars per year, this industry should be closed for reasons of welfare for the animals who must still participate in it. Lyn White, Campaign Director for Animals Australia, says: “Australian wool growers are striving to produce ultra-fine wool to meet demand from elite fashion houses in Australia and overseas. Every year, leading Italian fashion house Ermenegildo Zegna presents the prestigious ultrafine wool industry trophy – the Vellus Aureum Trophy – awarded to the finest micron fleece. This year the trophy was awarded to The Wool Factory in Horsham, Victoria by Count Paulo Zegna and the Australian Government...... middle of paper......" Chicago Tribune January 2, 1991: 5+.
